History of Marseille
Ancient Origins
Marseille, known as Massalia in ancient times, was founded around 600 BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea. It quickly became a significant trading port due to its strategic location along the Mediterranean Sea, facilitating commerce between the Greeks and the indigenous Ligurian tribes.
Roman Era
In 49 BC, Marseille became an ally of Julius Caesar during the Roman Civil War. It was later incorporated into the Roman Empire and flourished as a major port city. The Romans constructed various infrastructures, including roads, aqueducts, and public buildings, which contributed to the city's growth.
